Where we are
TikTok is currently owned by ByteDance—a Chinese technology company founded in 2012.
September 25, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order approving a $14 billion deal to divest TikTok’s U.S. operations to a consortium of American investors—separating TikTok US from ByteDance’s control.
Under this agreement ByteDance will retain less than 20% ownership while U.S. investors will hold at least 80% and full control.
The main buyers include
1. Oracle (led by Larry Ellison)
2. the private equity firm Silver Lake
3. the Abu Dhabi-based MGX investment fund.
The deal has up to 120 days to close—after which the U.S. version of TikTok will be majority-owned and controlled by U.S. entities (those mentioned above).
This move addresses national security concerns related to ByteDance’s Chinese ties
outside the U.S., TikTok remains under ByteDance.
